How to Change Planer Blades on a Thickness Planer

Has your planer blades become blunt due to constant use?

Do you want to change them so that they can work efficiently again?

Well, you don’t need any woodworker or technician to do that, you can do it yourself.

Changing planer blades on your thickness planer is amazingly easy, just keep the tools ready and keep this guide open and you will be able to accomplish this task in just half an hour.

So, are you ready to change the planer blades on your Thickness Planer?

Tools and Materials that you will need:

  • New Blades
  • Planer
  • Clean Cloth
  • Water

Steps that you would need to follow:

Step 1 – Removing the Planer Blades from your equipment

The first step requires you to remove the blades from your planer. However, before you start with this, make sure that your thickness planer is shut down and the cord is not plugged into the electrical outlet.

change planer blades

Once you have unplugged the planer and remove it away from the electrical outlet, you can begin by removing the planer blades of your equipment.

You will need to loosen the screws that are keeping the blade in place. Once you have done that, just simply pull out the blade and be careful to not hurt yourself.

Step 2 – Cleaning your Planer quickly

Once you have removed the blade, you need to clean your planer before you install a new blade inside it. So, take a clean cloth and some water and wet your cloth with the water.

Then use this damp cloth to wipe down the planer so that there is no dust or debris lying around. If you keep your planer clean and regularly perform this task, then your planer will last for a longer period of time.

If you feel that your planer needs a little more cleaning before you proceed with installation of the new planer blades, then do that. Also, make sure that you dry the planer before you proceed with anything else. You may also like to checkout Homeguyd’s buyer’s guide to thickness planers.

Step 3 – Replacing your Planer Blade with a new one

Now, once your planer is all clean and there is no sawdust or dirt lying around, then you can finally install a new planer blade in your tool. Just simply slide it in and adjust the height of the blade. Make sure that it is a little high but not so high that it breaks off the tool.

You will need to make a few adjustments so that the blade fits perfectly inside the planer and you will have to use your own judgment for that. You can also nip them in when you are trying to fit it and tighten it only once you have found the right fit.

Once the blade is in place, you need to put the screws back in and secure them tightly so that they don’t fall off, taking the blade with them.

Best Holiday Travel Tips

So you want to go visit Grandma for the holidays while having a wonderful trip with your kids.

Here are a few holiday travel tips to help you do that.

1) Plan ahead

Schedule your flights, hotels and car reservations as much in advance as possible.  Prices escalate during the holidays because of greater demand.  And book direct flights, if possible, because every time you make a connection you chance something going wrong because of weather delays or other circumstances.

2) Expect the unexpected.

Airlines overbook all during the year, but especially during the holidays which are busy travel days.  Book flights early in the day and arrive early, very early.

This will help with a couple of things.  When you book an early flight if you get bumped there will be other flights you can take.  If you book a late flight, then you may get stranded until the next day.  And when you are one of the first ones to check in you are less likely to get bumped.

3) Avoid peak travel days

Try to travel 2 days prior to the holiday or on the holiday itself.  They day before the holiday is the highest travel day.

4) Getting to the airport

If you live very far from the airport you may want to stay at an airport hotel the night before.  Most airport hotels have shuttles that will take you to the airport and you can leave your car at the hotel and not have to pay the airport parking fees.

Travel Airport

Check with your hotel for details, but if you are going to be gone several days the cost of the hotel may not be much more than paying for parking while you are gone.  Or if you live close to the airport, try to have a neighbor take you to the airport or take an airport shuttle so you do not have to find a parking spot as the parking lots fill up during the holidays.

5) Pack light

The overhead bins will fill up during holiday travel so ship as much as you can to your relatives’ house as you can.  Remember to ship it at least 3 weeks prior to make sure it arrives on time.    And do not take wrapped gifts on board, you will not get through security with wrapped gifts.

6) Kids activities

Let each child bring a back pack that they can carry and will fit easily under the seat.  They can pack with their favorite activity and snack to keep them occupied.

7) Secure your home

Make sure to stop you mail or have a neighbor pick it and your newspapers up.

Secure Home

Invest in timers to have your lights go on and off so it looks like someone is home.

8) Most important

Take a good attitude.  Be prepared for setbacks and, especially with kids, remember that boredom is your enemy and get the cards out and play games.    Waiting can be a fun family time with just a little planning.

So plan ahead, go with the flow and make those wonderful holiday memories that will last forever.…

Why Would You Go to Puerto Rico?

Well, Puerto Rico is as diverse a destination as you can imagine.

It is an exotic Caribbean group of islands, yet still part of the United States.  So you do not need a passport if you are a U.S. citizen.

Puerto-RicoIn  Northwestern Puerto Rico, you can experience part of the third largest underground river cavern system in the world. If you like adventure, Puerto Rico is the place for you.  You can hike El Yunque National Rainforest which is a finalist as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.  Or you can have the thrill of you life as you fly 1000 feet and 200 feet above ground on one of Puerto Rico’s zip lines.  ATV’s and horseback rides through the rainforest are other options.

Perhaps the crystal clear water of the Caribbean is why you go to Puerto Rico.  Just lounging on the beach may be your perfect day.  But once again, if adventure is more what you like there are plenty of water activities.  Go sailing on a catamaran, surf, snorkel or scuba dive.

Have you dreamed of being on a deserted island?  Puerto Rico has one.  Gilligan’s Island.  The island forms part of the Guanica Biosphere Reserve.  It can be easily reached by ferry for a small fee and is the perfect place to go snorkeling, swimming and sunbathing.  Access to the island is limited so you can enjoy a little bit of paradise.

Looking for something very unique?  How about water that seems to glow a magnificent blue-green at night?  Although there are seven recorded places in the world where this natural phenomenon occurs – three of which are in Puerto Rican waters – it is widely accepted that the picturesque Puerto Mosquito Bio Bay is top of the list when it comes to the quality and brightness of the bio-luminescent experience.

Puerto Rico seems like the perfect place to go for adventure, relaxing and a little bit of the unusual.…
